PRODUCTS: Balanced Active Lifestyles - BAL PartnersClick here for 2006 Worldwide Corporate Responsibility Report
Balanced, Active Lifestyles issues call for attention, innovation, and collaboration by many sectors. From the outset, our approach has involved consultation and collaboration with numerous nutrition and fitness experts, nonprofit organizations, trade associations, government agencies, and other stakeholders.

At the corporate level, our approach is guided by an advisory committee of independent experts from around the world. We also have a global network of independent nutrition consultants.

Some of our local and regional business units have supplemented these resources. For example:
  • McDonald’s Europe has established a Nutrition Steering Group of experts to provide guidance on menu development, review customer information materials, and serve as a sounding board for strategies.
  • McDonald’s Australia has partnered with The Food Group Australia—a team of accredited practicing dietitians who advise the food industry. FGA provides the company with advice and recommendations on childhood nutrition, Happy Meal and other new menu developments, and communications with health professionals.

We have also sought to learn from and collaborate with policymakers at the global, regional, and national levels, including the World Health Organization, the International Union for Health Promotion, the European Commission, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the European Heart Network.

Numerous local projects reflect collaborations. In addition to the Information projects cited:
  • McDonald’s Canada has joined with the Canadian Olympic Committee to promote physical activity among students. The Go Active! Olympic Fitness Challenge provides schools that register with a set of exercises, training materials, and tools to monitor students’ fitness levels during periodic tests throughout the year. Classes completing the program receive cash-equivalent credits to use for physical education equipment.
  • McDonald’s Germany participates, as a founding member, in a cross-sector platform to provide information on nutrition and exercise. The platform was initiated by the Ministry of Consumer Protection, Nutrition and Agriculture and includes various national associations and food industry companies.
  • McDonald’s Brazil collaborates with a local newspaper in sponsoring one of the largest student athletics competitions in the country—the InterMcDonald’s.
  • Our U.S. business has formed an alliance with the Produce for Better Health Foundation to inform consumers about the importance of including a variety of fruits and vegetables in their daily meals and snacks.
