Electrical energy use is our restaurants’ largest direct environmental impact—and a significant cost. So effectively managing electrical energy is one of our highest environmental priorities. It helps us reduce emissions that contribute to climate change, conserve natural resources, and advance McDonald's long-term, profitable growth—all at the same time.
Our approaches to electrical energy management vary from market to market, depending on opportunities for improvements in operations, available technological options, and relative energy costs. By and large, they focus on five broad areas:
- Informing and educating McDonald's owner/operators and restaurant managers.
- Developing guidance and tools to support effective electrical energy management. These include a chapter in our worldwide Operations and Training Manual for restaurant managers and online tools that help managers assess energy uses and costs, handle equipment maintenance, and develop cost-effective schedules for turning equipment on and off.
- Using energy efficient equipment and equipment that automatically controls and prevents excessive energy expenditures.
- Building and remodeling restaurants with energy efficiency in mind.
