The first store opened in Dublin 9/10 Grafton Street on 9th May 1977. The first McDonald's drive-thru restaurant in Europe opened January 1985 at the Nutgrove Shopping Center in Rathfarnham and in May 1996 the most westerly McDonald's restaurant in Europe opened in Tralee County Kerry.
Of the restaurants currently open in Ireland, 50% are owned and operated by franchisees. |

| Who are they? |

Our operators are enterprising men and women who want to start up a franchising business. Some have a Senior/middle management background and come from a wide variety of companies. Many have experience in managing commercial concerns. Others have already been at the helm of small/medium-sized companies. They share a business spirit, a successful background and the ability to manage a company well. Added to this, they have their own startup capital.
McDonald's franchising is not for everyone though -
To operate a McDonald's franchise you need the managerial and personal skills necessary to run a business employing 50 or more people and serving half-a-million customers a year.
You'll also have to make a personal commitment to run the business, day in, day out, for the term of the contract. Finally, it is imperative to be flexible in terms of moving within the country.
It should come as no surprise, then, that our selection process is rigorous. We look for individuals with a demonstrated ability to lead and manage people, good common business sense and a track record of success in whatever they are doing. A restaurant background is not necessary, nor is a large amount of capital - although you will be asked to make a personal investment in the business. |
