Uruguay is a country located in the southern part of South America, against the Atlantic Ocean and borders with Argentina and Brazil. It has a territory of 176,220 km2, smaller than Washington state. |

The total population is around 3.3 million. People speak Spanish, where their main cultural roots come from, although 25% of the population has Italian roots. Most of the people are catholic, but the church is officially separated from the Government. Uruguay's literacy rate is very high, having a large urban middle class, with a relative evenly distributed income throughout its society. |

| Almost half of the population lives in Montevideo, Uruguay's capital. It is located in the southern part of the country, on the Río de la Plata River. Other important cities are Colonia, Las Piedras, Maldonado, Paysandú, Rivera, Salto, San José and the famous Punta del Este with its beaches and nightlife. |
