For the academic year 2007–2008, McDonald’s USA has awarded college scholarships to 51 outstanding restaurant employees. This is one of the many ways we show our people that we care about them and support their development. There is one scholarship winner in each state and one chosen as the top candidate in all 50 states—the McScholar of the Year.
This year’s McScholar of the Year is Chelsea Yates. At the time she applied, she was a crew member for owner/operator Frank Chalfont, in Centralia, Missouri. With the scholarship, Chelsea has enrolled at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri.
Chelsea says she's not certain what the future may hold for her, but there's one big thing she'd like to do—own a café. "McDonald's has helped me get a feel for working with food," she says. "The time, the effort, the always-be-prepared-for-the-random-rush, and the people skills. Plus it's helped with confidence, taking pride in every little job…and, most of all, having a good time."
Scholarships are awarded annually under the McDonald’s Employee Scholarship Program. For nearly 15 years, this program has recognized and rewarded the accomplishments of student-employees who excel in their studies, serve their communities, and work hard to deliver outstanding service to our customers. Winners receive a grant to attend any accredited institution that offers post-secondary education and/or career training and instruction and may use the award to study in whatever field they choose. Winners are selected by an independent panel of educators on the basis of applications submitted by the candidates, recommendations, grades, and test scores. Applications for next year will be available, through this website, on January 1.
