2017 HBCU Classics

McDonald’s is celebrating History, Heritage and Legacy at HBCU Classics across the country as a part of our True To HBCU program.

The 2017 HBCU Classics kicked off in Memphis at the Southern Heritage Classic between Tennessee State and Jackson State University. Surrounded by bands, fans and football – McDonald’s dominated the tailgate area by sampling five thousand Fruit Punch Slushies, and handing out Rally Towels. Between the selfies frames and the McDonald’s inflatable arches, fans were able to snap pics of themselves within the space while dancing to the sounds of the DJ. Fans also had the opportunity to win $30 worth of McDonald’s arch cards by participating in the “Heads Up” Game or remixing the infamous Big Mac Jingle. All in all, young and old alike were entertained before the game.

Next, McDonald’s headed south for the State Fair Classic in Dallas on October 7th to watch Grambling State face off against Prairie View A&M. The weekend kicked off on the 6th at Sandaga Bar and didn’t stop util the final whistle. At the McDonald’s booth brand ambassadors McDonald’s handed out Rally Towels, Be Our Guest Flyers and Mango Pineapple Smoothies while children were encouraged to meet the life size “My Litle Pony Mascots”. We kept the party going in the stadium where consumers had the chance to participate in the McDonald’s Build a Burger Relay Race. Fans were also encouraged to sit in the McDoanld’s VIP Seating Area for an opportunity to win Apple Watches through raffle. During the game, as a part of the True to HBCU platform, McDonald’s presented a check to each school at halftime, encouraging students and colleges alike to represent and maintain their pride in their HBCU.

On October 28th, McDonald’s travel to the historic city of Birmingham, AL for the Magic City Classic. Depsite the rain and wind fans kicked of their day at the Magic City Parade where hometown favorites led the fan to the tailgate area at Legion Field. At the McDonald’s booth, fans were greeted with brand ambassadors passing out arch cards, samples of Mango Pineaple Smoothies, branded miniature footballs, and rally towels. Fans had the chance to play “Heads Up”, hit the dance floor and even charge their phones in the McDonald charging area. It was the place to be before Alabama State Univeristy took on Alabama A&M University with Alabama State Univeristy continuing their 8 year winning streak.

The McDonald’s train kept chugging to Orlando for the Florida Citrus Florida Blue Classic on November 18th. In the Florida heat, McDonald’s offered fans handheld misters and a space to charge and chill at the McDonald’s tailgate booth. Met with cool samples of Mango Pineapple Smoothies after tearing up the dance floor with DJ Strong, McDonald’s definitely had a lit booth. During the game, Ronald McDonald invaded the team club suites, helping fans cheer for their favorite teams, passing out branded footballs, and taking pictures. Bethune Cookman College and Florida A&M University gave the fans an amazing game, with Bethune Cookman reigning as champs for another year.

Wrapping up the five series tour, McDonald’s will visit Atlanta, GA for the 2017 Air Force Reserves Celebration Bowl on December 16th. Check back later for all of the details.
