Towards a more sustainable future, one meal at a time

McDonald’s Qatar is committed to creating a positive environmental impact by embedding sustainability into its operations. Through various eco-friendly initiatives and partnerships, we strive to balance developmental needs with the protection of the natural environment—whether land, sea, or air—for a cleaner, greener future. Our dedication to sustainability aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030 and reflects our commitment to a greener future while positioning us as a leader in this vital area.

In 2025, we proudly opened our 78th branch in Msheireb Downtown Doha, the first “Green McDonald’s.” This flagship location was designed as a bold step into sustainable innovation—featuring energy-efficient systems, eco-conscious materials, and an electric bike delivery, exclusively serving the Msheireb area. With dedicated play areas and a family-friendly setting, it reflects our ambition to combine environmental leadership with community engagement.

We have already made significant strides in reducing our environmental footprint. In August 2024, we introduced sustainable packaging and utensils sourced from the GCC, including wooden stirrers, paper straws, and paper-based packaging for meals and desserts. Iconic items such as the McFlurry cups and Royal Chicken Salad bowls have been redesigned to eliminate plastic, showcasing our focus on innovation in eco-friendly alternatives. Additionally, Happy Meal toys are transitioning to recycled and sustainable materials, including paper, plant-based plastics, and certified wood fiber, ensuring an environmentally responsible experience for our customers. These changes have been fully implemented across all restaurants by early 2025, offering a greener dining experience that reduces waste and minimizes exposure to harmful chemicals.

Our commitment extends beyond packaging. We are exploring technological advancements to optimize energy use and reduce environmental impact through the implementation of an Energy Management System in our restaurants. Since 2017, our oil recycling program has transformed used cooking oil into biodiesel, enhancing supply chain sustainability. We also actively engage the community through eco-friendly initiatives such as beach clean-ups, raising awareness about the importance of protecting Qatar’s natural resources. Proudly, from 2020 to May 2025, we contributed to the recycling of 999,256 liters of used cooking oil into biofuel through a partner certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU) system—reinforcing our role in advancing circular solutions and environmental stewardship.

Environmental responsibility has been central to McDonald’s Qatar since our first restaurant opened in 1995. With more than 78 restaurants today, our efforts continue to grow, solidifying our role as an environmental trailblazer in the Quick Service Restaurant industry. By choosing McDonald’s Qatar, customers become part of a journey toward a sustainable future—one restaurant, one meal, and one toy at a time. Together, we can drive lasting change and build a brighter, greener tomorrow.
