McDonald’s Canada to rollout reusable McFlurry® Spindle

02-23-2023

McDonald’s Canada is taking another step in its reduction of single-use plastics from  restaurants by rolling out a reusable McFlurry® mixing spindle nationwide. Starting February 2023 in Montreal and extending to the rest of Canada by year end, guests will receive a wooden spoon with their McFlurry instead of the traditional plastic spindle/spoon they have received since the 1990s.  This comes after the company began testing the reusable McFlurry mixing spindle across four locations in the Greater Toronto Area in January 2022.

While it’s a seemingly small change, replacing the McFlurry plastic spindle with a wooden spoon and reusable spindle is expected to eliminate approximately 191 tonnes of single-use plastic resins from the Canadian system annually.† This is just one of the ways McDonald’s Canada is reducing single-use plastics in its restaurants. In late 2021, McDonald’s Canada removed certain single-use plastics from restaurants, namely plastic cutlery (excluding the plastic McFlurry spindle/spoon), stir sticks and straws.

McDonald’s Canada remains committed to making changes big and small while keeping the planet top of mind, so families in Canada can feel good about enjoying their favourite treats like the McFlurry.

Timeline for national rollout

  • Montreal – February 2023
  • Rest of Canada – by end of 2023
