Families are at the heart of who we are and what we do at McDonald’s® Canada.
In Canada, 70% of Canadians live outside a city with a children’s hospital. So when a child gets sick and needs to be hospitalized, families often have to travel hundreds of kilometers for the treatment and support their child needs. A difficult and unexpected journey.
At Ronald McDonald Houses and Family Rooms, families are given a caring place to stay close while their child is being treated at the nearby hospital. With bedrooms, kitchens, quiet spaces to be together and a loving and supportive atmosphere, RMHC truly becomes a home away from home for our families.
“RMHC Toronto is so welcoming. I would’ve had to stay in Olek’s hospital room, and my husband and daughter would’ve been four hours away, driving back and forth from home. I can’t even imagine.”
McDonald’s played a founding role in opening the first Ronald McDonald House in Canada in 1981. Since then, 321,393 families have been supported by RMHC programs across Canada.
The 15 Ronald McDonald Houses coast-to-coast provide families with a home to stay at while their child is being treated at a nearby hospital. Complete with bedrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms, our Houses are an oasis of support for families during this difficult time.
Sixteen Ronald McDonald Family Rooms in Canadian hospitals provide a comfortable place for families to rest and recharge, right inside the hospital.
Two Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles (mobile health units) help provide basic medical care to underserved communities in Alberta.
As RMHC’s founding and forever partner, McDonald’s Canada, its franchisees and its guests support Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada in many different ways:
A portion of every Happy Meal purchase is donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada, creating a sustainable revenue source for Ronald McDonald Houses and their programs. Happy Meals have raised more than $60 million in support of RMHC Families!
The first Wednesday in May each year, McDonald’s restaurants across the country host McHappy Day, an annual celebration of giving to support RMHC and local charities. A great Canadian tradition founded in 1977, McHappy Day has raised over $56 million for RMHC and communities across the country.
Small change makes a big difference for families! Every day, McDonald’s guests help to support families in their community by dropping their change in coin boxes in McDonald’s restaurants. These funds support Ronald McDonald Houses and Family Rooms, and the over 30,000 families helped each year.
