When a child is seriously ill or injured, families do not just visit them in hospital. They want to stay close, informed and involved in their child’s care. Ronald McDonald House UK exists to make that possible.

They are an independent charity and have been supporting families in the UK since 1989. In that time, they have helped more than 100,000 families stay close to their child when they need it most.

What the charity does

Ronald McDonald House UK provides free accommodation just minutes from children’s hospital wards, so families can stay together for weeks, months or, when needed, even years.

The Houses are more than somewhere to sleep. They are places where families can:

  • Rest and recover after long days and nights on the ward
  • Cook meals, wash clothes and maintain everyday routines
  • Have privacy, dignity and space during an overwhelming time
  • Spend time with others who understand what it is like to have a child in hospital

Each family staying overnight has their own private ensuite room, offering comfort, independence and a sense of control. Shared spaces provide warmth, understanding and connection.

Ronald McDonald House UK also support families who are not staying over night by providing Day and Medical Passes. These give families access to kitchens, lounges and respite spaces and allow children to spend precious time with family away from the ward, where clinically appropriate

With the support of donors and partners, Ronald McDonald House UK helps families stay close to their child for as long as they need to.

McDonald’s involvement

McDonald’s is the founding and forever partner of the charity and has supported Ronald McDonald House UK since 1989.

The McDonald’s community enables fundraising at scale through customers, crew, franchisees and suppliers, helping raise vital funds so families can stay close when their child needs hospital care.

Donations made in McDonald’s restaurants and on digital platforms help families cope with the emotional and practical challenges they face during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Since 2024, McDonald’s customers, crew, suppliers and franchisees have donated just over £18 million. In 2025 alone, their support raised £9 million, helping accommodate 8,488 families and support thousands more through Day and Medical Passes.

From summer 2026, McDonald’s App users will also be able to round up their order total to support Ronald McDonald House UK, helping even more families stay close.

Raising money in many ways

The McDonald’s family supports many of Ronald McDonald House UK’s events and restaurant employees, Franchisees, office staff and suppliers regularly take part in fundraising activities to raise money for the Charity. As well as this, teams from McDonald’s often volunteer at Ronald McDonald Houses, offering enthusiastic support to the House teams.

Impact and fundraising

In 2025, Ronald McDonald House UK supported 8,488 families across 14 Houses, with families staying an average of 16 nights. Many families stay for months or longer, depending on their child’s treatment.

On average, families supported by Ronald McDonald House UK would otherwise have had to travel 79 miles to be with their child. In total, the charity helped save families more than 10 million miles of travel in 2025 alone.

UK reach

There are 14 Ronald McDonald Houses across the UK, all located close to NHS hospitals that care for seriously ill children.

Each House is designed around family-centred care, recognising that supporting parents and carers is an essential part of caring for the child. By keeping families together and close to hospital, the charity helps children cope better with treatment and supports families to stay involved, informed and supported throughout their hospital journey.
